Attic Condensation in Irish Homes — Ventilation, Not a Leak
If your attic got damp after you insulated it, the roof is probably fine — the airflow is not.
Why upgrades cause damp
Insulating an attic makes the roof space colder, and a cold space with no airflow condenses the moisture that rises out of the house below. The result is water droplets on the underside of the felt, damp insulation and sometimes mould on rafters — with no roof defect at all.
Telling it apart from a leak
Condensation is spread evenly across the roof space and is worst on cold, still nights. A leak is localised, follows a specific track down a rafter and worsens during and after rain.
The fix
Ventilation at the eaves via vented soffits, ventilation at the ridge via a dry ridge system or ridge vents, and making sure insulation is not stuffed hard into the eaves blocking the airflow path. It is inexpensive work with a very large effect.
