Why ridge tiles fail

Ridge and hip tiles on older Cork roofs are bedded on a sand and cement mortar. That mortar has a working life of roughly 20 to 30 years in Irish weather before frost, thermal movement and driving rain break the bond. Once one tile rocks, wind gets underneath it and the rest of the run follows quickly.

The warning signs are visible from the ground: a hairline crack running along the mortar bed, small mortar fragments in the gutter, or a ridge line that has gone slightly wavy. Any of those means the ridge is due, and it is far cheaper to rebed it than to replace tiles smashed on the path.

Rebedding versus a dry ridge system

Traditional rebedding lifts the tiles, cleans off the old mortar and beds them back on a fresh mix, usually with mechanical fixings added. It keeps the original look, which matters on period and slate-roofed properties around Cork city.

A dry ridge system uses a ventilated union roll and screws each tile down mechanically with no mortar at all. It is maintenance-free, ventilates the ridge, and is the better long-term answer for exposed and coastal Cork properties. We price both.

A ridge rebed is a one to two day job on a standard house, and it is genuinely one of the highest-value pieces of preventative work you can do on an Irish roof.
