Moss on Your Roof in Cork — When It Actually Matters
Moss holds water against the covering. On some roofs that matters a great deal.
Why Cork roofs grow moss
Damp air, mild winters, mature trees and north-facing slopes are ideal moss conditions, and Cork has all four. On a well-ventilated concrete tile roof it is largely cosmetic; on an ageing slate roof it holds moisture against the slate and the nail heads and accelerates their failure.
Never pressure wash a slate roof
High-pressure washing strips the surface of tiles, drives water up under the laps and past the underlay, and knocks slates loose. We have re-roofed Cork houses whose real problem was an enthusiastic power wash. Scrape and treat, do not blast.
What to do instead
Physical removal, clearing the resulting debris out of the gutters, and a biocide treatment where growth is heavy. If the moss is heavy enough to have been holding water for years, get the roof surveyed rather than just cleaned.
