Annual Roof Maintenance Checklist for Irish Homes

Twenty minutes a year prevents most of the roofing bills we get called out for.

Do this every autumn

Once the leaves are down, walk the perimeter of the house and take five minutes in the attic. That is the whole routine.

  • Clear gutters, hoppers and downpipe outlets
  • Check every gutter joint for drips during rain
  • Scan the ridge line for cracked mortar or movement
  • Look for slipped, cracked or missing slates and tiles
  • Check flashings at chimneys, abutments and valleys
  • Inspect fascia and soffit timber for soft spots
  • In the attic: daylight, damp staining and wet insulation

When to call someone

Anything you cannot see clearly from the ground, anything on the roof itself, and anything involving a chimney. A free inspection costs nothing and beats guessing from a garden with binoculars.
