Slate vs Tile Roofing — Choosing a Covering for a Cork Home
Four coverings, four very different price points — and only one that is right for a period property.
Natural slate
The premium option and the correct one for period and protected buildings. Extremely long-lived, thin and light relative to tile, and it looks right on Cork's older housing stock in a way nothing else quite manages. It costs the most up front.
Fibre cement slate
A strong middle option: the clean flat line of slate at a considerably lower cost, uniform in size so it lays fast, and well proven in Irish weather. Widely used on estate housing across Ballincollig, Carrigaline and Midleton.
Concrete and clay tile
Cost-effective and durable, but heavier — which matters if the existing roof structure was designed for slate. Clay holds its colour far better than concrete over decades. Both are common on Cork's newer builds and perfectly sound when correctly fixed.
